Besides dust and pollen, specific foods are the most common triggers for allergies. Millions of people suffer from food allergies, where they have to be careful about what they eat, and ingredients in dishes. 

Food allergies occur when your body’s immune system mistakenly recognizes some food as dangerous to your health. The cells release IGE or Immunoglobulin E antibodies to neutralize the allergens. So the next time you eat the food, histamine releases to cause itchiness in hives or unpleasant stomach upsets. 

Children are most susceptible to food allergies, which occur immediately or within 2 hours of consuming the food. There are six main foods that trigger allergies, which are listed below. 

1.   Eggs

Children generally develop an allergy to eggs, and outgrow it, and can later start eating it in adulthood. There’s no cure for egg allergy. Just regularly check to see if your body’s tolerance to it has changed. 

2.   Milk

Milk allergy is usually confused for lactose intolerance. While symptoms are similar, milk allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to milk proteins. In lactose intolerance some of the body’s digestive enzymes don’t break down. 

Infants generally get milk allergies to outgrow them in a few years.  If you don’t outgrow it, avoid milk and use its alternatives like soy and almond milk. 

3.   Peanuts and tree nuts

Peanuts and tree nuts like almonds and pistachios can lead to serious reactions, which is why you have to be careful about what you eat if you are allergic to them. 

With so many products containing nuts, make sure you read all labels before eating. You also have to avoid their oils and salad dressings containing them because they contain enough to trigger anaphylaxis. 

4.   Wheat

It’s the gluten in wheat that attacks the immune system to trigger an allergy. It’s difficult avoiding wheat because it’s found in lots of foods like pasta and bread. It’s safer to instead consume foods with substitutes like rice, tapioca or bean flour. 

5.   Shellfish

Shellfish allergy is very common, and occurs more in adults than children. While crustaceans are easily identified and avoided, mollusks seafood is often consumed thinking they are safe. This is why it’s better to avoid all types of shellfish if you are allergic to it.
